Gaming authorities have ruled that Wynn Resorts can keep its Massachusetts gaming license, but are fining the casino operator for covering up sexual misconduct allegations against company cofounder and billionaire Steve Wynn
will retain its gaming license to operate its soon-to-open Encore casino in Everett. But, the casino operator will pay a $35 million fine due to the gaming authority’s findings that former company executives covered up sexual misconduct allegations against former CEO and cofounder Steve Wynn.
“Specifically, the corporate culture of the founder-led organization led to disparate treatment of the CEO in ways that left the most vulnerable at grave risk,” reads the decision. “While the Company has made great strides in altering that system, this Commission remains concerned by the past failures and deficiencies.”
Wynn’s current Chief Executive Officer Matthew Maddox, who replaced Steve Wynn, will have to pay a $500,000 fine for not launching an investigation after a Wynn Resorts spa employee complaint was brought to his attention. The decision comes after Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s year-long investigation into Wynn Resorts found that its former executives participated in a scheme to pay off and silence employees alleging sexual assault and inappropriate behavior by Steve Wynn. Multiple women who alleged misconduct, including rape, received payments after signing non-disclosure agreements.
